Can I hook up a DVD player using HDMI for video and optical audio for sound? - upconverting receiver

I know it sounds strange, but hear me. I have a DVD Upconverting Sony, Sony Receiver (No HDMI or video input) and a high definition TV Olevia. I need an HDMI cable from the DVD to the TV Upconvert to 1080i. Then use the optical audio connection between DVD and Receiver. My question is, the audio output of DVD players in the optical line with an HDMI connector? Is there a place where I must change this situation? Any help is welcome.
